On a tranquil, tree-covered island in the Ohio River in 1806, Harman Blennerhassett and former Vice President Aaron Burr reportedly planned to establish an independent nation in the Southwest.
The original Blennerhassett Mansion was built in 1800 and destroyed by fire in 1811. Today, through a continuing program of careful historical and architectural research, a splendid, reconstructed mansion is available for visitors to see . The house is decorated with original pieces and furnishings of the period.
Visitors may travel to the island on unique sternwheelers that leave from Point Park in downtown Parkersburg.
Bicycle rentals, picnicking, guided mansion tours, horse drawn wagon rides are all available on the island. Adding to the charm of the island, lush hardwood groves, long beaches and broad fields provide habitat for deer, throngs of water fowl and other birds
The Blennerhassett Museum at 2nd and Juliana streets is open year-round and features items owned by the Blennerhassetts. An archaeological exhibit, Civil War relics, old clothing, guns and a gift shop are also available.
Special events, battle re-enactments and other activities take place throughout the year. Boat transportation to the park is $8 for adults and $7 for children ages 3-12.
