At 133 acres, Cathedral is one of West Virginia's smaller state parks, but its principal attractions are among the biggest of their kind: old-growth hemlocks and hardwoods that pre-date European settlement and range up to seven feet in diameter.
This is the state's last stand of mixed virgin forest. These trees are so beautiful and so significant that the park was named a National Natural History Landmark.
The terrain is gently hilly. Along with the trees, highlights include Rhine Creek, more than 50 species of wildflowers and dozens of bird and mammal species.
This day-use park is popular with picnickers. Wildlife watchers, hikers, mountain bikers and cross-country skiers enjoy the miles of trails that wind through this magnificent woodland.
