Grays Harbor National Wildlife Refuge is located at the western edge of the city of Hoquiam and hosts hundreds of thousands of shorebirds.

This is a major stopover each spring for Western sandpipers, dunlins, and many other shorebirds beginning in mid-April.

Peregrine falcons and merlins also arrive in April. Throughout the year, a wide variety of wildlife is present on the tidal flats, in the salt marshes and in the adjacent upland habitat.

The refuge covers 1,487 acres of tidal flats, salt marsh, and deciduous forests. A one and a half-mile accessible trail, much of it a boardwalk, allows visitors to view a wide variety of habitats and wildlife.
