State Park Information

Breaks Interstate Park, on the Kentucky-Virginia border, features the largest canyon east of the Mississippi. It is five miles long, 1,600 feet deep and 250 million years old.

Sometimes called the Grand Canyon of the South, the gorge was carved by the Russell Fork River, a tributary of the Big Sandy.

The spectacular beauty of the park is seen along its 12 miles of hiking trails and four scenic overlooks. Mountain bikers traverse 10 miles of breathtaking scenery and thrilling trails. Well-maintained riding trails attract horseback riders.

Picnic areas are plentiful and shelters are located throughout the park.

White-water rafting takes place seasonally along the Russell Fork River. For rapids information, call the park headquarters.

The park’s 12-acre Laurel Lake is stocked with bass and bluegill and is restricted to electric motorboats. A pool and pedal boats are also available.

Secluded in peaceful woodlands are two-bedroom, fully equipped family cottages, available year-round. Campers can choose from 122 sites with utilities from April 1 to Oct. 31. There is also a restaurant, gift shop and conference center with 83 lodge rooms inside the park.

The area's natural and historic features are highlighted at the interpretive center.
