West Whitlock Recreation Area is a popular destination for people who come to sail, powerboat, fish, water-ski, swim and dive on 100-mile-long Lake Oahe Reservoir.
Thousands of fisherman come to Lake Oahe in pursuit of walleye. In early spring, anglers fish for northern pike with dreams of topping the 36-pounder that was caught from the shore in 1993.
Chinook salmon, white and smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, brown trout and sauger also provide action.
Hikers and mountain bikers share a four-mile trail along the shoreline. In winter, trails are groomed for cross-country skiers, and there's lots of snowmobiling just outside the park.
A replica of an Arikara earth lodge is a reminder of the area's importance as a campsite for the Arikara and Mandan people. The park is named for Mrs. J.F. Whitlock, a descendant of pioneers who once owned the land.
Facilities include 103 campsites and camping cabins.
