From the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, the 622,000-acre Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests offer a wide array of outdoor activities.
The forests, established in 1936, are situated in three geographically separate areas. The two sections of the Sumter forests are in the state's interior mountain and central region while the Francis Marion skirts the coastline.
Along the northern edge of the Sumter forest is the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River, offering some of the most challenging white-water boating in the East and quality trout fishing.
The forests' wilderness areas offer an abundance of activities, including more than 370 miles of hiking, horseback and canoe trails. Recreational facilities at 50 locations offer boat ramps, swimming and picnic areas.
Some sites within the forest charge for parking.
