Beavertail State Park, on Beavertail Road in Jamestown, is known for its recreational activities as well as its place in American lighthouse history.
The nation's third lighthouse was built here in 1749. Its foundation, uncovered by a 1938 hurricane, remains visible. The third light built on this site, the nationally renowned 1856 Beavertail Lighthouse, still stands.
This 153-acre park also offers spectacular views of Newport Harbor.
The park is a favorite place for picnicking, surf fishing and walking. There are no established trails, but many visitors amble along the open stretches of its rocky shore.
Beavertail also had an important role during the two World Wars. Bunkers where soldiers once watched for enemy ships still remain, but are closed to the public.
