John H. Chafee National Wildlife Refuge, formerly the Pettaquamscutt Cove Refuge, straddles South Kingstown and Narrangansett and is accessible only by boat.
Visitors usually reach the 317-acre refuge from the Middlebridge Boat Ramp at the mouth of the Narrow River.
The refuge is made up of estuaries and tidal saltwater marshes and provides important migration and wintering habitat for a variety of waterfowl and other birds including wading birds, passerines, terns, gulls, shorebirds such as plovers and sandpipers and various rails.
It has been identified as the most important black duck migration and wintering habitat in Rhode Island. The refuge is also home to several rare and uncommon plant and animal species.
The refuge is popular with saltwater anglers, canoeists, and kayakers.
