Tyler State Park preserves a piece of rural history in its old stone farm dwellings, some dating back to the early 1700s.
Cyclists, hikers and equestrians get a close-up view of these vintage structures, which are privately leased and maintained, from trails that crisscross the fields and woods of this 1,711-acre park.
About a quarter of the park is leased to farmers who grow winter wheat, corn, soybeans and hay, offering visitors a glimpse of modern farm practices.
The mix of forest and fields supports a large variety of birds. In early summer, foxes and their kits are frequently seen playing in the meadows. Deer are also common.
Most of the trails are west of Neshaminy Creek, which runs through the park. Bicyclists use about 10 miles of asphalt paths dotted with rest stops and picnic areas. Equestrians enjoy about nine miles of dirt trails on both sides of the creek, some of them created by George Tyler, the land owner who lived here in the early 1900s.
Hikers can use all of these paths, in addition to about four miles restricted to pedestrian use. Environmental education programs are offered from September through May.
Anglers fish from the creek banks or from canoes, which can be rented in the park. Sunfish, black crappie, carp and smallmouth bass live in the creek, as do snapping turtles, eels, frogs, water snakes and muskrats. Gasoline boat motors are barred from the creek, however electric motors may be used.
In winter, the creek is often good for ice-skating and ice fishing. Sledding, tobogganing and cross-country skiing are also common.
Located in the northern section of Tyler, the Schofield Ford Covered Bridge is the longest bridge in Bucks County. Originally built in 1874, the bridge burned down in 1991. Reconstruction was completed in 1997 by a group of volunteers.
The park is the home of the Langhorne Players, a local theater group that performs in a former grain and feed mill. The Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen runs the State Crafts Center in the park. The Center offers workshops and hosts large craft festivals in May and October. Hostelling International (215-968-0927) provides accommodations to travelers on foot and on bicycle in Tyler.
