Crawford Notch State Park, covering 5,775 acres and a six-mile stretch of the scenic mountain pass, offers popular family hikes to stunning cliffs and brisk waterfalls.
Arethusa Falls, more than 200 feet tall, is the highest in the state. Access to the 1.3-mile, moderately steep trail is off Route 302, just south of Dry River Campground, which has 31 campsites with hot water, showers and laundry service.
Ripley Falls is a peaceful spot to relax after the .5-mile walk in. Follow the Ripley Falls Trail, which diverges left from the Ethan Pond Trail.
The campground serves as a base for excursions, ranging from short walks to day-long hikes, into the park and the adjacent White Mountain National Forest.
A plaque marks the site of the Willey House, a way station for travelers in the late 1700s. Samuel Willey, his family and two hired hands died in a landslide here in 1826.
