Rock Bridge Memorial State Park's numerous caves, springs and sinkholes (collectively known as karst topography) are the result of water eating away the limestone bedrock over thousands of years.
Visitors to this park, located five miles south of downtown Columbia, can walk under and over the park's namesake and into Devil's Icebox, a double sinkhole that is also the entrance to Missouri's seventh-longest cave.
In addition to caves, sinkholes and springs, the park is known for the Gans Creek Wild Area, a 750-acre tract preserved in its wilderness state. Gans Creek is characterized by sweeping curves along its course, framed by tall limestone bluffs. Oak, hickory, persimmon, wild cherry and other hardwoods share the terrain with a profusion of wildflowers and ferns.
The park's diverse habitats make for very good birdwatching. There are currently more than 170 bird species on the checklist.
Trails in this day-use park exceed 20 miles, with some portions suitable for cross-country skiing and mountain biking. Gans Creek trails are open for horseback riding in summer, weather permitting. Call 573-442-2249 for trail conditions.
The park is distinguished by its orienteering course. Checkpoints throughout the park are used in organized competitions and by individuals practicing the sport.
