For thousands of years, time in the Missouri River Basin has been measured by the migration of waterfowl. Each spring and fall, northwestern Missouri is inundated by ducks and geese.
The Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge preserves 7,350 acres of marshes, grasslands, forest and croplands that waterfowl and other wildlife inhabit.
The refuge hosts 301 bird species, 33 mammal species and 35 reptile and amphibian species. It is a wintering area for bald eagles and snow geese.
The refuge offers a quarter-mile wheelchair-accessible hiking trail.
During April and May there is mushroom hunting and there is berry picking during mid to late summer.
