The biggest jewel in Missouri's natural treasury is the 1.5-million-acre Mark Twain National Forest. Located in southern Missouri, these public lands cross 29 counties. The topography ranges from valleys and foothills to the rugged Ozark Mountains. There are forests, fields, lakes, streams and wildlife.
There are more than 40 campgrounds and picnic sites, more than 350 miles of streams, lakes ranging from 10 to 440 acres and seven wilderness areas totaling more than 63,000 acres.
In addition, there are hundreds of miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding and 125 miles of trails for off-road vehicles.
Fishing and bird watching are among other popular activities.
