Located north of St. Louis on Missouri Hwy. 79, the 3,750-acre Clarence Cannon refuge was established in 1964 to protect the Mississippi River's floodplain, forests, grasslands and wetlands.
The refuge, located one mile east of the small town of Annada, is home to migrating waterfowl, bald eagles, herons, egrets, deer, raccoon, muskrat, beaver, otter and coyote. Rails and bitterns nest in the extensive wetlands. Tens of thousands of ducks use the refuge each spring and fall.
This refuge is managed by staff at the Great River National Wildlife Refuge.
Clarence Cannon National Wildlife Refuge is open year-round during daylight hours.
No hunting is allowed on Clarence Cannon, and portions of the refuge are seasonally closed to public entry during peak waterfowl migrations. Fishing is permitted by boat only in Bryant’s Creek, along the southern refuge boundary.
