The Vaughn Wildlife Management Area was a game farm from the 1940s to the 1960s. Pheasants were bred here for release into the wild and wildlife biologists experimented with plants and planting arrangements thought to benefit wildlife.
Today, wildlife and nature lovers alike find much to appreciate at E.A. Vaughn. Its mixed habitats support a diversity of birds, from woodpeckers and warblers in the extensive woodlands to waterfowl in the marshes and open water. Wood ducks in particular thrive in a forest tract deliberately flooded each fall, in what's called a "greentree reservoir."
Hunters find plenty of game, from deer to rabbits and from ducks to mourning doves. There is a designated area for physically challenged hunters.
Unmarked trails afford hiking and all-terrain biking. Anglers can bottom-fish for sea trout, croakers, flounders and bluefish.
A primitive camping area is available.
