Deal Island is one of the best places in Maryland to watch, hunt and photograph ducks and geese. Although the site's 13,400 acres include woods and an "impoundment," or man-made pond, most of the terrain consists of tidal marsh combined with open water, a habitat rich in things water birds love to eat.
No other place in Maryland offers such abundant and varied waterfowl, including wigeons, pintails, gadwalls, teal, shovelers, black ducks, mallards and Canada geese. Herons, egrets and ibis are also common.
Besides hunting and wildlife observation, the crabbing and saltwater fishing at Deal are noteworthy.
A trail around the 2,800-acre impoundment is a treat for hikers and nature viewers. A primitive camping area is available, but be prepared for mosquitoes.
