Assateague State Park is Maryland's only ocean park, and is famous for its wild ponies.

Camping and water recreation are the big draws at this facility, which was called one of the nation's 10 best state parks by National Geographic Traveler in 1994.

Assateague State Park offers 350 improved drive-up campsites, 39 with electric hookups. Amenities include a store, dumping station and modern bathhouses.

Access for the disabled is good, with accessible facilities including the boat launch and boarding sites, four campsites and areas for fishing, swimming and picnicking.

Surf casting, boating, sunning and swimming are the primary day uses at the state park. You may also crab or dig clams.

While the park is closed in winter, the boat launch remains open year-round.

Birdwatching is good, and the ponies are a treat, but visitors must keep their distance.

Cyclists are welcome on bike paths, and cycling in is a good way to beat the traffic.
