State Park Information

Located near the Virginia border along the Chesapeake Bay, this 3,147-acre park preserves an island in Tangier Sound and a tract on the mainland.

The park's namesake is a marshy island with a sand beach. Canoe trails through the island's salt marshes allow visitors to view a profusion of birds and other wildlife.

Because it's only accessible by boat, the beach offers seclusion that is rare on the highly developed mid-Atlantic coast.

Visitors also come to fish, with piers available on the island and mainland. The mainland pier is wheelchair-accessible. Power boats, kayaks and canoes are available for rent. Anglers come for croakers, trout, flounder, bluefish and striped bass. Crabbing is also popular.

There are 104 improved campsites, including three wheelchair-accessible sites, and 50 with electrical hookup.

There are also 10 new paddle-in primitive campsites on the island, which require a backcountry permit, plus an orienteering trail.

Campgrounds are open from April through October. Open year-round are four cabins, one of which is wheelchair-accessible. Five camper cabins are available from April to October.

A conference center is open year-round. There is also a camp store.

A fitness trail is about one mile long.
