Covering 46,000 acres of Allegany County, this dense forest blankets the mountains of western Maryland.
Twenty-seven miles of hiking, a 12-mile bike loop and an 18-mile ATV loop are available. There are short wheelchair-accessible trails.
The park provides a boat launch on the Potomac. Anglers fish in the big river as well as the many trout streams that run through the forest. Green Ridge is especially popular with fly fishermen.
History buffs find a number of Civil War-era cemeteries and Civilian Conservation Corps buildings in the forest.
Wildlife, including wild turkey, grouse, squirrel and deer, is abundant.
The forest has 100 primitive campsites. Backcountry camping is allowed along the trails with a permit.
Facilities for mobility-impaired hunters are available.
