State Park Information

Washington Monument State Park is named for the 34-foot stone tower built by the citizens of Boonsboro, Maryland, in honor of George Washington. The tower was dedicated on July 4, 1827.

Situated on the summit of South Mountain, a spur of the Blue Ridge chain, the park today covers 108 acres. It is traversed by the Appalachian Trail, which passes by the base of the monument and is a popular destination for day hikers.

There are excellent opportunities for birdwatching at the mountain’s summit, especially during mid-September.

From April to September, a museum and Civil War living history events celebrate the park’s rich history. Call for a current listing of events.
