State Park Information

Land treasured for centuries by Native Americans and later by traders and farmers is now valued by recreation seekers.

Kankakee River, listed on the Federal Clean Streams Register, is key to this park's popularity. The park straddles the Kankakee River for 11 miles, covering 4,000 acres.

Anglers and canoeists relish the park's recreational opportunities. The Kankakee is a clean river, great for landing smallmouth bass, channel catfish, walleye and northern pike.

The park has one boat ramp for launching craft with 10 hp motors or less. The river's shallow water and rocks pose no problem for canoeists.

The park's abundant wildlife makes it a popular spot for hunters. Only bow hunting is allowed for deer. Firearm hunting is permitted for duck, pheasant, woodcock, rabbit, squirrel, fox, coyote, spring turkey and raccoon.

The park's trail system stretches for miles along both sides of the river. Hiking, biking and cross-country ski trails are on the river's north side. A three-mile route along Rock Creek leads hikers to limestone canyons and a frothy waterfall. A bicycle trail begins at the Davis Creek Area and travels 10.5 miles along the river and into the west end of the park.

On the south side of the river are equestrian and snowmobile trails. A 12-mile equestrian trail in the wildlife management area is open seasonally.

The visitor’s center has numerous exhibits and displays about the history, geology and wildlife of the park. A variety of guided hikes and programs are offered seasonally.

There are several campground areas with more than 250 primitive and developed sites. Two rental cabins are also available. Campsite reservations are accepted from May through October.
