Established in the mid-1980s, Mackinaw River State Fish and Wildlife Area preserves 1,448 acres of timbered hills, open meadows, ponds and a portion of the Mackinaw River.
The area offers excellent fishing and hunting. Anglers try for smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, channel bluegill, crappie and carp.
Hunters seek out a variety of pheasant, waterfowl, rabbit, squirrel and deer.
The river offers many recreational opportunities, including canoeing, kayaking and tubing.
The park has a unique wheelchair-accessible trap shooting range.
The longest of the hiking trails is the 2.5-mile Old Gold Mine Trail, which highlights a 1920s gold mining scheme.
Gold was shot into a hillside, and fortune seekers were charged $2 to try and dig out their riches.
