State Park Information

The 2,762-acre Harris Neck refuge was once a World War II airfield before the refuge was established in 1962 to protect saltwater marsh, grassland, cropland and deciduous woods habitat.

Located along the South Newport River in historic McIntosh Country, the refuge is a panoramic blend of pine and oak forests, open fields, freshwater ponds and salt marsh.

The habitat attracts hundreds of painted buntings, endangered wood storks and other migratory birds.

During summer, the refuge is home to one of the largest rookeries along the Georgia coast.

Winter is an excellent time to see large concentrations of ducks, turkey, wintering birds and deer.

Some sections of the refuge are closed during the breeding season.

The four-mile Wildlife Drive is open to vehicles and there are several hiking and biking trails available.

Fishing is permitted in tidal creeks bordering the refuge.

More than 15 miles of paved roads and trails provide the visitor easy access to many different habitats. Chosen for it's accessibility and bird diversity, Harris Neck is one of 18 sites forming the Colonial Coast Birding Trail, inaugurated in 2000.
