Lums Pond State Park is one of Delaware's most popular haunts for outdoor recreation, with a 200-acre pond, hiking trails, ballfields, campground and marina.
The namesake of the 1,790-acre park was created when the St. Georges Creek was dammed in the early 1800s to provide water to fill the locks of the nearby Chesapeake & Delaware Canal. Now the pond supports boaters, swimmers, anglers and a colony of beavers.
Several short hiking trails cross the park, including the Swamp Forest Trail, which rings the pond. Two piers provide pond access to fishermen, who try for catfish, pickerel, striped bass and bluegills.
A marina is being constructed on the C&D Canal, at the park's southern boundary.
A 68-site campground is open from March through November. Other facilities include an airfield for radio-controlled model planes, courts for a variety of games including tennis and croquet, and a dog-training area.
Winter visitors enjoy cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice-fishing and snowshoeing.
