The rugged San Juan National Forest is an ideal place to explore southwestern Colorado's exciting cultural and natural history.
A 236-mile loop road, the San Juan Skyway, takes travelers over high mountain passes and through historic towns. Ghost towns from Colorado's mining days, ancient Navajo dwellings and Chimney Rock Archaeological Area are outstanding attractions in the forest.
The forest shares Colorado's largest wilderness area, the Weminuche, with the Rio Grande National Forest.
The San Juan offers a variety of hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and four-wheel-drive trails. Visitors hike the Colorado Trail. In winter, they heli-ski or cross-country ski in the backcountry or try Durango's downhill runs.
Water skiers, windsurfers and wildlife watchers enjoy McPhee and Vallecito reservoirs, while kayakers and rafters tackle the upper and lower branches of the Animas River.
