The San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge is the primary wintering area for the Pacific Flyway canvasback duck population.
The refuge is also home to the endangered California brown pelican, California clapper rail and salt marsh harvest mouse.
Saltwater fish include striped bass, surf perch, sturgeon, starry flounder, leopard shark, topsmelt and anchovy.
The refuge covers 13,190 acres of estuary habitat including uplands, open water, salt marshes and mudflats.
It has a bike trail at Tolay Creek. Canoeing and kayaking are permitted in the open bay and in navigable sloughs.
