This northern California forest boasts five wilderness areas, 1.7 million acres of timberland and a seemingly endless supply of rivers, creeks, mountain lakes and grasslands inhabited by antelope, wild horses, porcupines, deer, coyotes, bears and mountain lions.
Butte Valley is a major stop for waterfowl on the Pacific Flyway. At peak migration in October, the population is estimated between 3 and 4 million birds.
This area is considered one of the best for salmon and steelhead fishing in California and also offers excellent trout fishing in the crystal-clear creek tributaries and high mountain lakes.
The Salmon, Scott and Klamath rivers offer swimming, whitewater rafting, kayaking and canoeing.
The forest is also considered a mountain biker's paradise with 4,000 miles of roads and trails offering an endless variety of challenges.
Other recreational activities in the forest include mountain climbing, horseback riding, rockhounding, cross-country skiing and spelunking.
