Named for the longhorn cattle that once ran wild in the area, these steep, chaparral-covered slopes provide an extensive network of trails for hikers, horseback riders and off-road vehicles.
Scattered stands of pine, fir and oak provide a backdrop for black-tailed deer, mountain lions, bobcats and black bear.
There are North and South Cow Mountain trails. Off-road vehicles and mountain bikes are allowed on the 120-mile South Cow Mountain network.
North Cow Mountain hiking and horseback-riding trails include the challenging 11-mile Glen Eden trail and the 4.5-mile Valley View trail.
The three-mile Mayacmas trail is not recommended for horses, but is great for hiking and mountain biking.
