Big Morongo is a lush desert oasis that supports large populations of birds and wildlife. The desert springs ecosystem and Mojave forest are some of the best in the state.
More than 300 bird species live here, among them the rare vermillion flycatcher. Bighorn sheep also flock to these desert springs, once frequented by nomadic Native Americans.
A wheelchair-accessible boardwalk has been constructed over the spring and there are short loop trails for hiking and birdwatching.
From Palm Springs, travel west on Interstate 10 to State Hwy. 62. Travel north on 62 for 11.5 miles to Morongo Valley. Turn right on East Drive and go a short distance to the preserve entrance on the left.
