This trail to the North Fork of the American River provides bikers, hikers and horseback riders with 4.5 miles of gentle meandering trails along the canyon.
The trail opens onto a series of spectacular views of this famous Gold Rush-era river. Visitors pass a high railroad bed, known as the infamous "China Wall." It was built by Chinese laborers who had to dangle in baskets from even higher cliffs.
Several mine shafts beside the trail are reminders of the canyon's historic past and the river offers opportunities for recreational gold panning.
BLM officials describe the trail as more suitable for hiking than biking or horseback riding.
During the months of April and May, visitors are treated to a beautiful wildflower display. Dogwoods and redbud are the larger flowering plants, while baby blue eyes, shooting stars, monkey flowers, and lupines brighten the lower plant canopies.
To reach the trail, follow I-80 East towards the town of Colfax and exit at North Canyon Way. Travel along North Canyon Way past the Colfax cemetery to the Stevens trailhead.
