State Park Information

In the San Bernardino Mountains, the forest service has developed an extensive networks of campgrounds and dozens of picnic areas for families and groups who want to enjoy a day in the mountains.

The forest offers camping, picnicking, fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, horseback riding and more. During the winter, visitors come to the forest to cross-country and downhill ski, snowshoe and snowmobile.

Two scenic byways, the 67-mile Palms to Pines and the 107-mile Rim of the World, allow vehicles and cyclists to explore the forest. Hiking trails include a 193-mile section of the Pacific Crest Trail.

There are now four wilderness areas within the forest: the Cucamonga, San Gorgonio, San Jacinto and Santa Rosa, and a newly-designated 272,000-acre national monument called the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument.

The forest's San Gorgonio Wilderness is popular despite its rough terrain and scarcity of water. Wilderness camping is limited by quotas and a maximum of five can climb to the summit of San Gorgonio Mountain each day.

Quotas also are imposed on travel and camping in the San Jacinto Wilderness. These federal lands lie on either side of the San Jacinto State Wilderness in rugged mountain terrain. The rock climbing is excellent. Elevations range from 6,000 to 10,000 feet and plantlife ranges from desert to alpine.

The going is rough in the Santa Rosa Wilderness in the Santa Rosa Mountains. Boulder-strewn, highly eroded canyons, valleys and steep cliffs hinder hiking. However, hikers are rewarded with outstanding scenery, unique plants, desert ecosystems and views of bighorn sheep.

The phone number for the Arrowhead District Office in Skyforest is 909-337-2444, the San Gorgonio District phone number is 909-794-1123 and the San Jacinto District Office's number is 909-659-2117.

The forest's TTY number is 909-383-5616.
