The Plumas National Forest in northern California offers fishing, mountain biking, whitewater kayaking, hiking and camping. It also has the six highest waterfalls in the western United States.
The Middle Fork of the Feather River is known for its whitewater rafting. Canoeists also tackle some of the Middle Fork's calmer stretches and the forest's many lakes.
During the winter, the snow-covered forest attracts cross-country skiers, snowshoers, winter campers and snowmobilers.
Anglers drop lines in many large and small lakes across the forest.
The Feather River Scenic Byway parallels the Feather River Canyon and the North Fork, which features railroad bridges, tunnels and aquaducts that make for excellent train photo opportunities.
