From hiking and camping to cross-country skiing, the Mendocino National Forest in northern California offers year-round recreation.
Spanning 65 miles in length and 35 miles across, the forest's 913,306 acres of mountains and canyons offer a variety of recreational opportunities, including camping, hiking, backpacking, boating, fishing, hunting, nature study, photography, and off-highway vehicle travel.
Visitors can fish, swim, ride horseback, go hang gliding or take a challenging wilderness hike.
The forest encompasses Snow Mountain, the southernmost peak in the North Coast Range and part of the 37,000-acre Snow Mountain Wilderness. Some 122 wildlife species live here, including black-tailed deer, black bear, mountain lions, bald eagles, golden eagles and goshawks. This area's ecology is unique, as the topography makes a transition from the Coast Range to lower valley foothills.
The Mendocino also provides access to the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness area. The trail system is extensive, but solitude is the main attraction of this remote wilderness.
