If you are looking for RV camping or a wilderness trekking experience, you can find it in Lassen National Forest. The forest offers some of the best fishing in the state and camping at 44 campgrounds.
A 120-mile portion of the Pacific Crest Trail crosses the forest and cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are popular during the winter.
The forest has three wilderness areas. The Thousand Lakes Wilderness has many lakes, but not a thousand. The Caribou Wilderness actually has a greater number of lakes, but no caribou. Many of its lakes are stocked. The lakes are frozen and snow is on the ground until June most years.
The Ishi Wilderness is rugged, remote and isolated, but its mild climate is conducive to nearly year-round use. Golden eagles and black-tailed deer are common.
Lassen Volcanic National Park is located in the center of the forest.
