This 18-mile network of paths follows the abandoned Yosemite Railroad grade from the Briceburg Visitor Center to the Hwy. 49 bridge at Bagby.
Ungroomed and largely unshaded, the paths are excellent for hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders.
Along the way, the trail passes the vestiges of a water diversion from the turn of the century. Look for the rare limestone salamander.
There are three Bureau of Land Management campgrounds along the Merced River. They are the McCabe Flat Campground, Willow Placer Campground and the Railroad Flat Campground.
The campgrounds are accessible only by crossing the bridge at Briceburg and heading down river on the trail, which is an old Yosemite railway.
Only equestrian, pedestrians and bicycles are permitted on the trail beyond the Railroad Flat Campground.
To reach the trail from Merced, travel 40 miles east on State Hwy. 140 to Mariposa. Then travel another 15 miles on Hwy. 140 to the Briceburg Visitor Center.
