Seal Beach is part of the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station, located south of the city of Seal Beach in Orange County.
The refuge preserves essential habitat for the California least tern, light-footed clapper rail, California brown pelican, peregrine falcon and Belding's savanna sparrow. It also provides a stop-over and wintering grounds for migratory shorebirds and waterfowl.
The refuge, in cooperation with the U.S. Navy, operates a nature center adjacent to the saltwater marsh. The center, with its native plant garden and sweeping view of the salt marsh, is the starting point for public tours of the refuge.
Tours are scheduled for the last Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and require reservations.
The Friends of the Seal Beach N.W.R. assist the refuge in providing tours, monitoring wildlife and restoring native habitat. Except during tours and scheduled volunteer activities, the refuge is closed to the public.
