The country’s tallest earthen dam, which stretches 770 feet above the stream bed of the Feather River, forms Lake Oroville.
Covering about 28,450 acres near the City of Oroville, the park has extensive horse, bicycle and hiking trails. Fishing, boating and bird-watching are also popular.
Nearby is the Feather River Fish Hatchery, built by the Department of Water Resources to replace lost spawning areas for salmon and steelhead.
Displays detailing the state water project and the area’s natural and cultural history are featured at the visitor center. Native American life is portrayed, as is information about the gold mining town of Bidwell Bar, now completely covered with water.
Campers can choose fully equipped tent, trailer and RV sites, group sites and a horse camp.
There are 10, two-tiered floating campsites moored in coves and accessible only by boat.
There are also boat-in primitive campsites. Boats can be rented at the park.
Feather Falls and the Feather River Scenic Byway, both noted for their beauty, are nearby.
