The 3,374' elevation of Picacho Peak has been a landmark for travelers for more than 150 years. The peak is an eroded lava flow left over from a series of flows that began 22 million years ago. This geological structure is four times older than the Grand Canyon.
Picacho Peak is historically significant as well. Although far removed from the battlefields of Antietam and Gettysburg, Arizona saw Civil War action. Union troops clashed with Confederates near the peak in the Battle of Picacho Pass, the largest Civil War battle fought in Arizona.
Each March, costumed reenactors on foot and horseback recreate the battle with black powder weapons and cannons.
Today, two challenging hiking trails ascend the 1,500' vertical climb to the peak. Hunter Trail starts on the north side and the Sunset Vista Trail starts on the south side.
On a clear day, both Tucson and Phoenix are visible from the peak.
