Dead Horse Ranch State Park, located near the community of Cottonwood in scenic Verde Valley, belies its ominous name.
Best known as a birdwatching haunt, the 800-acre park is also popular for picnicking, camping, canoeing, horseback riding and stream and pond fishing. Walking trails follow the shady banks of the Verde River.
The park's fully-equipped campground also offers tables and grills, showers, electrical hookups, restrooms and bathhouses.
Birdwatchers may spot the great blue heron, bald eagle, black hawks and other species.
The 3,300 foot elevation of the park creates mild temperatures and great hiking opportunities along the Verde River.
Wildlife at the park includes coyotes, bobcats, javelina, river otters, raccoons, mule deer, beaver, frogs and toads.
