The 824-acre Millwood State Park skirts Millwood Lake, a 29,500-acre fishing hotspot known nationwide.
Boat lanes lead fishermen through the submerged timber to the marshes and oxbow-shaped lakes within Millwood.
A wide variety of fish and wildlife live in the lake and the surrounding hills. Millwood offers good crappie fishing in the spring and fall as well as excellent catfish and bream fishing in the summer.
A 1.5-mile hiking trail called Waterfowl Way provides a glimpse of native plants and animals. Birdwatchers spot bald eagles in large numbers from December to February. The fall brings mallards, canvasbacks and other ducks, while the great blue heron is present year-round.
One of the lake's coves is home to an active beaver lodge. Another common inhabitant is the American alligator. The alligators emerge from hibernation in April or May and can be seen in the secluded, swampy areas along Waterfowl Way.
A scenic, half-day driving tour, "Meandering Around Millwood," begins at the Visitor Center and leads to cypress swamps, scenic overlooks and an ancient Caddo Indian Mound.
Nestled in the pine forest along the banks of Millwood Lake are 114 year-round campsites with water and electric hookups, picnic tables and grills. There are also primitive campsites.
A full-service marina is located within a short walk of the campgrounds. Flat-bottom boats, motors and paddle boats are available for rent.
