State Park Information

Established in 1986, the Cache River National Wildlife Refuge protects 55,000 acres that span four counties and stretch for more than 60 miles. The refuge office is situated off Hwy. 33, 16 miles south of Augusta.

Wild turkey, white-tailed deer and an occasional black bear inhabit the refuge, but it is best known as a wintering sanctuary for waterfowl. The period from October to early April is the best time to view snow geese, mallards and other water birds. Neotropical songbirds, bald eagles and peregrine falcons are also found in the refuge.

Foot travel is permitted, but there are no established paths. Biking is permitted only on public roads.

A satellite refuge, the Bald Knob National Wildlife Refuge in Bald Knob, Ark., opened in 1997 to protect waterfowl wintering habitat. The 15,000-acre area offers hunting, fishing and wildlife observation.
