Straddling the White River and covering 160,000 acres of bottomland hardwood forests and wetlands, this refuge offers many recreational opportunities, including fishing, camping, boating, wildlife observation, photography, and hunting.

Waterfowl abound during spring and fall migrations. The refuge hosts many native animals including deer, squirrel,

turkey, and the only population of black bear native to Arkansas.

More than 350 lakes, 53 creeks, bays, and bayous and the White River offer sunfish, bass, catfish, crappie and rough fish. A youth fishing rodeo is held each June and a Wildlife Festival every October.

Boat ramps are located at St. Charles, Clarendon, Aberdeen, Preston Ferry, Indian Bay, Moon Lake, Weber, Hudson's Landing, Jack's Bay, Lock No.1, Maddox Bay, East Lake, and many other locations. A fee is charged at some private ramps.

Nearly 90 miles of gravel road and 400 miles of dirt trails offer wildlife viewing opportunities. There are hunting seasons for deer, turkey, duck, squirrel, raccoon, rabbit, and opossum.

The refuge has 30 primitive camping areas.
