This 5,484-acre refuge, established in 1961, is made up of ponds, wetlands, cypress swamps, bottomland hardwood timber and crop land.
A bald eagle pair nests in the vicinity of the refuge. The refuge also hosts bobcats, river otters, coyote, cottonmouth water moccasins, copperheads and timber rattlesnakes.
Songbirds thrive in the refuge, with warblers migrating through in early May. Resident waterfowl include wood ducks and mallards.
