The Imperial National Wildlife Refuge protects 25,768 acres of desert uplands and wetlands extending 30 miles along the Lower Colorado River.
The refuge is home to desert bighorn sheep, mule deer, coyotes, wild burrows, and a variety of birds and reptiles.
The last non-channelized section of the Lower Colorado River flows through the refuge.
Although the temperatures in the summer can exceed 110 degrees F, winter months are comfortable and there are a number of "snowbirds" that visit the refuge during winter.
