The refuge also provides habitat for a host of neotropical migrant birds as well as year-round resident species, including the endangered Yuma clapper rail.
The habitat, covering 18,500 acres of riverbottom, also provides a home for wintering puddle ducks and migratory birds.
Visitors should bring plenty of gas, water, a hat and sun protection.
Picnicking is allowed, there are tables available near the headquarters building.
During the winter season, the refuge offers interpretive programs and guided tours.
