The Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge was established to protect the Sonoran Desert ecosystem and its resident bighorn sheep. Today, endangeredSonoran pronghorn antelope and endangered lesser long-nosed bat also receive special attention.
The 860,010 acres of Sonoran Desert habitat cover low mountain ranges separated by broad alluvial valleys. Recreational opportunities include wildlife observation and study and photography. Though very hot in summer, the refuge is beautiful in spring when desert flowers and cacti are in bloom.
Most of the refuge is designated wilderness. Free entrance permits are required. Bring plenty of gas, water, a hat and sun protection. A minimum of a gallon of water per person per day is recommended. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is required to drive on the refuge.
The refuge borders Mexico for 56 miles. In recent years, there has been an upsurge in illegal trafficking of drugs and people and a subsequent increase in law enforcement activity. Visitors are advised to use caution and common sense when traveling and camping on the refuge.
The eastern two-thirds of the refuge is closed from March 15 to July 15 each year during the Sonoran pronghorn fawning season.
Information about the closure and alternative recreational opportunities is available by contacting the refuge office.
