One of the largest national forests in the country, the Tonto embraces nearly 3 million acres, ranging from cactus-studded desert to pine-clad mountains.
During the winter, mild weather attracts visitors to its lakes in desert canyons. Visitors seek refuge from the summer heat in the tall pines of Mogollon Rim country and in the forest's rivers, lakes and trout streams.
Six man-made reservoirs on the Salt and Verde Rivers offer power boating, sailing, water skiing, swimming, fishing, rafting and tubing. World-class white water can be experienced on the upper stretches of the Salt River.
Seven wilderness areas encompass 589,000 acres, and portions of the Verde River have been designated as Arizona's only federally protected Wild River Area. There are two National Scenic Byways that offer 106 miles of enjoyable sight-seeing.
Anglers fish for trout in cold streams and for bass in desert lakes. Hikers and horseback riders have 900 miles of trails to explore.
Developed, primitive and boat-in campgrounds are available. Some campgrounds remain open year-round.
