The 1.25 million acres of the Prescott National Forest are divided into two separate regions. The eastern section forms the headwaters of the Verde River while the western portion includes the Bradshaw and Santa Maria mountain ranges.
The highest point, at 7,971 feet, is Mount Union.
There are 12 campgrounds, including one for horseback riders, and five picnic areas. For the hiker, backpacker, horseback rider or mountain biker, the forest offers nearly 450 miles of trails. Natural water sources are scarce and it is recommended that visitors carry plenty of water.
Eight wilderness areas are located entirely or partially within the forest. Juniper Mesa Wilderness, located about two hours northwest from Prescott, offers hiking trails that offer beautiful views from the top of the mesa. Vegetation includes pinyons, junipers and ponderosa pines and elevations range from 5,200 to 7,200 feet.
