Bald Knob, a key wintering area for waterfowl, is divided into two units, Farm and Mingo Creek.
Farm, the largest unit, is one-half mile south of Bald Knob. Mingo Creek abuts the southeast corner of the Farm unit and the Little Red River.
The 14,800-acre refuge has historically been home to a large winter population of waterfowl, including mallards, pintails, blue-winged teals, wood ducks, Canada geese and white-fronted and lesser snow geese.
Agricultural land, river sloughs and brakes, bottomland hardwoods and fallow fields provide a diverse habitat that nurtures wintering waterfowl.
The refuge is part of the most important wintering area for puddle ducks in North America and hosts the largest wintertime concentration of pintails in the state.
It also provides key breeding habitat for wood ducks, hooded mergansers, herons and neotropical birds, and a pair of bald eagles nests here.
Visitors can hunt deer with bows, muzzle-loading equipment and shotguns. Firearms are allowed for small-game hunting.
Fishing is allowed in the various brakes and sloughs as well as rice flume ditches.
Bird-watching, hiking and wildlife photography are popular.
Access to the refuge is primarily by county roads, although many visitors launch boats from nearby state-owned ramps.
Interior refuge roads are primitive and not accessible during foul weather. The Mingo Creek unit of the refuge is accessible by boat and all-terrain vehicles only. All vehicles must stay on established road.
A waterfowl sanctuary is closed to the public from Nov. 15 through Feb. 28.
The refuge headquarters is located on Coal Chute Road, four miles south of Bald Knob, AR.
Reforestation is an ongoing project at the refuge with approximately 200 to 400 acres slated to be planted yearly during the next 15 years.
Tree species include water, willow, cherrybark and nuttall oaks, native pecan and bald cypress.
