State Park Information

Misty Fiords National Monument, covering 2.3 million acres of wilderness, is located at the southern end of the Tongass National Forest.

The dramatic landscape of deep, narrow fiords, steep-walled canyons, waterfalls and bowl-shaped lakes were craved by retreating glaciers more than 10,000 years ago.

The area is home to a variety of wildlife including bald eagles, black and brown bears, wolves, beavers, minks, martens, sea lions, harbor seals, orcas and humpback whales. Misty Fiords wilderness is favorite area among photographers, hikers, hunters, anglers, and boaters.

Its western boundary is 22 air miles east of Ketchikan. Misty Fiords National Monument is accessible from Ketchikan by boat or float plane only. There is no road access to the monument.

Great ways to experience the grandeur of this wilderness include kayaking, hiking, and camping in cabins and shelters. The cabins, located on both fresh and saltwater, and trails are maintained by the U.S. Forest Service. It is possible to go for days without seeing another person. Transportation to the cabins and other parts of Misty Fiords can be arranged in Ketchikan.

Visitors to this designated wilderness area should be equipped and skilled enough for the challenges that may arise.
